Province invests $782,100 in CMH as part of pay for results program

Cambridge, ON (July 29, 2010) – A $782,100 investment by the Province to improve patient flow from admission to discharge will significantly enhance the patient experience at Cambridge Memorial Hospital, administrators and medical officials confirmed today.

As part of Year 3 of its Pay for Results (P4R) initiative, the Ontario Government is providing CMH with one-time performance funding to improve its internal structures and processes around moving patients from the Emergency Department to other inpatient units.

“Cambridge Memorial Hospital is thrilled to be part of the ED Pay for Results project,” said President & CEO Patrick Gaskin. “Improving patient flow throughout the hospital is a key organizational initiative for everyone at CMH. Our success around this project means timely quality care for patients in our community and better utilization of available resources within our organization.”

This strategic investment in CMH – almost 1% of its total funding allocation from the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care – will enable the hospital to monitor, review, evaluate and make recommendations to ensure the deliverables and outcomes associated with it are met.

For his part, ED Chief Dr. Mark Shafir said any improvements to patient flow and additional resources for the area are welcomed news. Since March of 2010, he said, ED visits at Cambridge Memorial Hospital have increased 20% to a daily average of 140-150, up from 120.

“With additional clinician time on the front lines, that in itself will significantly improve our ability to serve the patient population,” said Dr. Shafir, an ED physician at CMH for the past 13 years.

Susan Gregoroff, Vice President of Clinical Programs and Chief Nursing Executive, said the new funding will allow Cambridge Memorial Hospital to build on the success of its recent process improvement project.

“This money will allow for strategic investments in key positions to help us deliver the most effective and timely patient care to residents of our community,” she said, citing additional resources in nursing, physicians, physiotherapy, clerical and support workers. “Our organization is all about people and so getting the infrastructure in place that allows us to make the best use of our resources while providing exceptional care is a great return on that investment.”
