Freedom of Information
What is FIPPA?
The Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act ("FIPPA") is provincial legislation that applies to most public institutions in Ontario. FIPPA was extended to include hospitals in 2010. It went into effect on January 1, 2012 and is retroactive to 2007.
The Act has two main purposes:
- To make public bodies more open and accountable by providing the public with the right of access to records; and
- To protect personal information from unauthorized collection, use or disclosure by public bodies.
