Cambridge Memorial Hospital (CMH) is committed to supporting the development of current and future healthcare professionals. Participation and partnerships with programs ensures our staff are ready to support the healthcare needs of the community we serve.
Through a variety of Ministry of Health funded programs and organizational initiatives, we provide opportunities for students, new graduates, internationally educated nurses, and experienced nursing staff to grow their knowledge, skills, and confidence in clinical practice.
These programs offer structured learning experiences, mentorship, and hands-on clinical exposure while strengthening the healthcare workforce and enhancing patient care. By collaborating with educational institutions, regulatory bodies, and provincial programs, Cambridge Memorial Hospital helps support the successful transition of learners and nurses at every stage of their professional journey.
The following programs highlight our commitment to education, mentorship, and workforce development within our organization: Enhanced Extern Program (EEP), Supervised Practice Experience Partnership (SPEP) Program, New Graduate Guarantee (NGG) Program, and Clinical Scholar Program.
Cambridge Memorial Hospital is a proud participant in the Enhanced Extern Program (EEP), funded by the Ministry of Health. This program provides hands on clinical experience to nursing and allied health students by placing them in healthcare settings across Ontario. Participants work as unregulated care providers under the direct and/or indirect supervision of regulated healthcare professionals.
Eligible learners include students in nursing, respiratory therapy, medicine, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and paramedic programs. At Cambridge Memorial Hospital, extern positions are currently only available to nursing students enrolled in BScN, RPN, and EP-IEN programs.
The EEP supports students in developing practical clinical skills, building confidence, and gaining meaningful experience within multidisciplinary healthcare teams. It also helps strengthen the healthcare workforce while supporting students’ transition from education to professional practice.
At Cambridge Memorial Hospital, Clinical Externs may work in the following areas:
- Intensive Care Unit (ICU)
- Emergency Department
- Inpatient Surgery
- Medicine A/B
- Inpatient Mental Health
- Women’s and Children’s
- Benefits of the program include:
For students
- Hands-on clinical experience in a real healthcare environment
- Increased confidence in clinical and patient care skills
- Exposure to healthcare teamwork, workflow, and workplace culture
- Mentorship from experienced healthcare professionals
- Stronger preparation for full-time practice after graduation
For healthcare organizations and the system
- Supports workforce capacity and future recruitment
- Creates a pipeline of trained, job-ready candidates
- Enhances patient care through additional clinical support
- Strengthens collaboration between healthcare organizations and educational institutions
Cambridge Memorial Hospital also participates in the Supervised Practice Experience Partnership (SPEP) Program, funded by the Ministry of Health. SPEP is a collaborative initiative involving the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO), Ontario Health (OH), the Ministry of Health (MOH), and participating hospitals.
The program supports eligible Internationally Educated Nurses (IENs) and domestic nurses who are out of practice in meeting their evidence of practice and language proficiency requirements for registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
SPEP participants are hired into paid placements and complete a supervised clinical experience within the hospital. Placements range from a minimum of 140 to a maximum of 450 hours and follow a structured preceptorship model. During this time, participants work under the direct supervision of a regulated healthcare professional while gaining practical experience within the Ontario healthcare system.
The SPEP program strengthens clinical competency, supports workforce capacity in healthcare organizations, and creates opportunities for future employment within Ontario’s healthcare system.
Cambridge Memorial Hospital participates in the Nursing Graduate Guarantee (NGG) Program, funded by the Ministry of Health. The NGG program supports newly licensed Registered Nurses (RNs) and Registered Practical Nurses (RPNs) as they transition from education into professional nursing practice.
The program offers eligible new nurses a temporary full-time employment opportunity in a supernumerary role, allowing them to build confidence and clinical skills while working alongside experienced nurses and mentors. During this transition-to-practice period, new nurses receive structured support, guidance, and hands-on experience in a clinical setting.
The NGG program includes 12 weeks of funded transition-to-practice, during which the new nurse works full-time hours with mentorship and supervision. Following this period, participating hospitals commit to providing the nurse with full-time employment, or the equivalent of full-time hours, for a minimum of six months, helping to support early career development and workforce stability.
This program benefits both new nurses and healthcare organizations by strengthening the nursing workforce, supporting professional development, and enhancing patient care.
To participate in the NGG program, new nurses must:
- Be a Registered Nurse (RN) or Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) licensed with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) within the past 12 months
- Hold a Temporary or General Class CNO registration
- Not have been employed as a nurse in Ontario within the previous six months
- Be legally eligible to work full-time in Ontario
- Be successfully matched with an employer through the NGG online portal
- Commit to accepting full-time employment, or the equivalent of full-time hours, following the transition-to-practice period
Cambridge Memorial Hospital participates in Clinical Scholar Program, an initiative supported by the Ministry of Health. This program offers experienced registered nurses the opportunity to serve as Clinical Scholars in supernumerary roles within the clinical environment, where they support the development and mentorship of nurses transitioning into practice.
This includes new nursing graduates, internationally educated nurses (IENs), and those seeking to enhance their clinical skills. Working collaboratively with clinical teams, Clinical Scholars provide mentorship, coaching, and education to nurses at various stages of their professional journey.
The program is designed to strengthen nursing knowledge and confidence, improve patient care outcomes, and foster a culture of continuous learning across the organization.
Key focus areas include:
- Supporting new nurses and staff transitioning into clinical practice
- Providing mentorship and coaching at the point of care
- Promoting evidence-informed nursing practice
- Supporting quality improvement and patient safety initiatives
- Enhancing professional development and lifelong learning opportunities
Through the Clinical Scholar Program, Cambridge Memorial Hospital continues to demonstrate its commitment to nursing excellence, workforce development, and the delivery of high-quality patient care.
