Meet Aleya Khan, a Clerk in the Health Information Management Department.
Aleya began her medical professional career in acute clinical settings as a Clinical Assistant in Medicine and ICU. Now playing a key administrative role as a Clerk in Health Information Management, she draws on her clinical expertise to support the accuracy, quality, and efficiency of medical records. Aleya is also passionate about fostering inclusive healthcare practices and has experience working in diverse, multicultural environments.
Aleya comes from a West Indian background with South Asian roots. To her, being Asian means carrying the values, traditions, and stories passed down from her family – from the food they eat to the way they celebrate and connect with each other.
Growing up in Canada taught Aleya the importance of inclusion, kindness, and the beauty of diversity. It is through this experience that she learned how to honour her roots and find strength in her uniquely blended identity, celebrating all parts of who she is – not just separately, but together.
When reflecting on Asian Heritage Month, Aleya says it is a time where she feels truly seen, and all the layers of her identity are acknowledged and celebrated. Aleya didn’t always see people who reflected her experience in media and believes this month emphasizes the importance of representation.
“Asian Heritage Month is about making space for voices like mine
and showing the next generation that they don’t have to choose one part of their identity over the other.”
An aspect of Aleya’s cultural identity that she takes great pride in is Ramadan. “It’s often misunderstood as just a month of fasting, but it’s so much more than that. It’s a time of reflection, discipline, gratitude, and giving back. Every evening, families come together to break fast — not just with food, but with prayer, love, and unity. There’s a deep sense of community and compassion during Ramadan that I wish more people could experience and understand.”
Aleya would also love for more people to know that Asian Heritage Month is not just a celebration of culture — it’s a celebration of identity, resilience, and belonging.
“This month is a chance to learn from each other, to ask questions, and to recognize the rich diversity that exists within the Asian community itself. It’s also a time to celebrate how far we’ve come, while continuing to create space for everyone to feel seen, valued, and included."
"By embracing our differences, we build a stronger, more compassionate workplace —
one where everyone can bring their full selves to the table.”
Thank you to Aleya for sharing her story!
