Cambridge, ON – CMH's Medical Day Clinic is the first in Ontario—and second in Canada—to receive a recent upgrade to technology used by its Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter (PICC) team. The BD Site-RiteTM 9 Ultrasound System is an enhanced version of technology our PICC team has already been using for a long time—now with features to better support patient care.

This system allows specially trained nurses—PICC specialists—to confirm catheter placement using state-of-the-art navigation technology. It is used for patients who often need weeks or months of treatment, such as medications, nutrition, or therapies that can be difficult through regular IV.

For staff, this represents an evolution in a service. The BD Site-RiteTM 9 features magnetic tracking, where sensors monitor the magnetic tip of the PICC line during insertion, providing real-time tracking to ensure precise catheter placement and enhanced patient safety.

For patients, it means a more comfortable, efficient, and accurate procedure. Patients experience fewer needle pokes, shorter insertion times, and for many, do not need extra chest x-ray images to confirm the line’s location. Set up time is also quicker. Patients receive treatment faster as line placement can be confirmed at the bedside.

“I cannot stress enough how crucial it is to have access to the right equipment and to receive treatment at my hometown hospital. Being surrounded by familiar staff, rather than having to travel to another facility, makes a significant difference.” said Kim Fowler, a patient in MDC, who praised staff for helping ease her anxiety about the procedure.

This upgrade reflects CMH’s ongoing commitment to clinical excellence, patient safety, and continuous improvement. By investing in the advanced technology, CMH continues to provide high-quality, evidence-based, patient-centred vascular access care.
