On October 1, CMH President & CEO Patrick Gaskin joined hospital and legal colleagues for Hospital Executive Oversight for Artificial Intelligence, the first session in the Ontario Hospital Association’s (OHA) new AI webinar series.
The discussion explored how hospitals can benefit from AI while addressing patient safety, privacy, cybersecurity and accountability.
Patrick shared a principle guiding CMH’s approach: start with the problem we are trying to solve. AI should be considered where it can improve patient care, support staff or strengthen operations, with careful thought about whether it is the right tool for the job.
Drawing on CMH’s experience, he described how Board oversight and collaboration across clinical, digital health, research and innovation, privacy and risk teams help assess proposed uses of AI. This brings different perspectives together to weigh potential benefits, establish safeguards and measure results.
He also highlighted the importance of staff ideas and patient and family input. Understanding the needs of those who use or are affected by AI is essential to making it useful. The takeaway: responsible AI adoption takes teamwork, clear accountability and ongoing evaluation, with professional judgment and human relationships remaining at the centre of care.#ourcmh
